Why is the DJI Mavic Pro 1 of the Hottest Toys for Christmas 2016?
Overall Design and Appearance
The Mavic Pro comes as a compact, collapsed unit that features four extendable limbs. At the end of each there is a propeller. The propellers are also collapsible. When you want to take off, you must simply extend the limbs outwards and then you’re ready to go. When all the limbs are extended, the Mavic has a wing-span comparable to that of the DJI Phantom 4. The Mavic Pro weighs in at just 1.6lbs, about half the weight of the Phantom 4. One of the main reasons that the DJI Mavic Pro is one of the hottest toys for Christmas 2016 is the huge amount of convenience and portability that the new model affords users. The Mavic Pro’s release has been delayed due to high demand and certain production set-backs, but according to our research the DJI Mavic Pro Release Date will be November 15 2016.
Surprisingly, the Mavic isn’t white like its predecessors, it’s grey and features golden details. The battery is placed on the top of the main body and can easily be attached or detached by pinching two buttons inwards. All the ports, outputs and inputs (USB, memory card, Wi-Fi switch, remote control reset button) sit on either sides of the main body and are well housed under protective coverings. The camera is smaller than on the Phantoms. Overall the design enhances portability and increases maneuverability.
The package also comes with a totally redesigned remote control. The DJI Mavic Pro has a small fold-able remote controller. It has two limbs which extend out to hold your device in place below a built-in screen. Two antennae also fold out of the top to ensure a good connection. The built-in screen gives you flight-critical data such as wind warnings, altitudes and speeds while your device screen presents the real-time video from the drone’s camera. Many testers have said that the remote is far more ergonomic, gives better aerial control and is also far easier transport. The drone itself and remote will fit into even the smallest of backpacks, meaning you can always take your drone along for the adventure.
Awesome Features
-OcuSync
The new features are also a reason that it is one of the hottest toys for Christmas 2016. The new transmission technology is a good example. The first technology used for video down-link from the drones to the device was a simple WiFi connection. Next came Lightbridge technology and we saw the latest developments in that space with Lightbridge 2 on the Phantom 4. The Mavic Pro now uses OcuSync technology. This is the latest and best transmission technology which basically allows you to see exactly what the drone is filming in real-time on your device’s screen.
Lightbridge 2 did encounter some issues such as when the Phantom 4 was at range sometimes the transmitted picture would become distorted as if it were losing connection. DJI have now adressed this issue and OcuSync now allows you to retain a 720p transmission connection at a range of up to 4.3 miles (7km) from the drone. This improves the overall experience and the connection even achieves 1080p when the drone is in closer proximity, where you will fly it most of the time. Image latency is now down to a mere 8 milliseconds. This gives users an awesome real-time image and is one of the main features that has firmly planted this drone onto the list of Top 10 Toys for Christmas 2016.
-Obstacle Avoidance
Yes, the Mavic Pro is far more compact and portable, but incredibly it also retains and even enhances on some of the features that are found on the Phantom 4. It utilizes the same 5 vision positioning sensors as well as the obstacle avoidance system that you find on the Phantom 4. Therefore it still knows exactly where it is at all times and will stop before smashing into objects or people.

-Controller Force Feedback
DJI have created a vibration safety feature called Force Feedback. The remote controller will actually vibrate in your hands when there is something important you need to know. A good example is if the wind picks up, you may well not notice as the wind speed may differ at the drone’s altitude and you may also be looking upwards at your drone. If the wind is dangerously high, the remote controller will vibrate so as to bring your attention to the issue on the screen. This is just an added safety measure but we like the inclusion of this intuitive feature.
-Top Speed
The Mavic Pro can get up to a speed of 18 meters per second which is about 48 miles per hour. On paper this is slightly slower than the Phantom 4 which has a top speed of 20 meters per second. This is the speed with both in the Sport Mode. In many of the tests that we’ve seen, the Mavic Pro has been far faster than the Phantom 4 in the Regular Mode and pretty much the same in when in the Sport Mode. The Mavic definitely isn’t slower due to its smaller size and packs the most punch per square inch of drone. One tester called it the sports car of the drones because he said it feels fast, engaging and agile.
-Flight Time
The DJI Mavic Pro also uses a Smart Battery like you find with the Phantom 4. This battery can be fully charged within an hour and is capable of affording the Mavic a flight time of 27 minutes in perfect conditions. You won’t get that amount of flight time if you’re flying vigorously, have advanced features enabled or if there are strong winds.
-Wi-Fi Mode
There is also a switch where you can change over to a new Wi-Fi mode. The switch is located beneath the protective covering which houses the SD card port. When you turn it to this mode, you can put the remote controller away. You can fly your Mavic with Wi-Fi up to a maximum range of 80 meters. This is great for bike riding or hiking when you don’t want to constantly have the remote controller out. It allows you to perform various tasks easily from the app, like take a selfie. You do this by simply opening up the app and using virtual controls to actually control the camera shutter and other components.
-Smart Features
Once again, there are many cool Smart Features on this DJI drone. ‘Tap-To-Fly’ allows you to simply tap an area on your device’s screen to instruct the drone to fly over in that direction. ‘Spotlight’ is a new feature that tells the drone to keep you in the frame at all times no matter what and it will re-position itself to do so. ‘Trace’ locks the drone in a position either behind or in front of you and it will stay in that position as it follows you. ‘Profile’ transforms the drone into a cable cam whereby it captures long tracking shots from the side. ‘ActiveTrack’ returns and allows you to select a subject for tracking. ‘Terrain Tracking’ is new and enables the drone to traverse a hill up to an inclination of 30 degrees without crashing into anything.
‘Gesture Control’ is also new and has brought selfies to drones. When enabled, you can wave at the drone to get its attention and then portray a picture frame with your hands to instruct it to take a picture of you. There is also built-in first person view support which is exciting, however we don’t yet know which FPV goggles will be compatible. We’ve heard rumors of DJI bringing out their very own goggles for this feature. All the Smart Features also make this one of the hottest toys for Christmas 2016 and are sure to keep the fun rolling throughout the holiday.
Bottom Line on the DJI Mavic Pro
The DJI Mavic Pro is an unexpected arrival and is a brilliant drone for those on the go. It’s sure to excite those who favor compact devices and portability and will also be of interest to many who haven’t taken a leap of faith with their first drone due to their large size. The image quality is still impeccable and it can capture in stunning 4K. Some say the Phantom 4 drone is slightly crisper. The Mavic Pro definitely wins the battle in terms of agility, portability and responsiveness and this is why it is one of the Hottest Toys for Christmas 2016. On average, those who have tested the Mavic Pro, favor it over previous DJI drones and we know it’s going to be a massive hit this Christmas as well as in 2017.
